Conveniently located between the town of Paralimni and the city of Famagusta, the village of Deryneia is attracting so much attention that whether you want to or not, you simply have to take a look to see what all the fuss is about!
So, what is all the fuss about?
Well, Deryneia, first and foremost offers the traditional Cypriot way of life combined with all the modern amenities that we all want (if not need) in this day and age!
History & Culture
As well as boasting 3 Byzantine churches that date as far back as the 15th century, Deryneia also has a Folk Art Museum that is a very popular venue for weddings as well.
The locals of the village are very proud people and are constantly trying to improve the area, the latest cultural additions to the village include a new Cultural Centre overlooking Famagusta and an Open-Air Amphitheatre. Whilst the Cultural Centre provides great insight into the area’s history, the Amphitheatre hosts plays, dances and celebrations that attract locals and tourists alike.
Once a year there is also a festival in honour of ‘Saint Modestos’ that is held in the streets near the centre of Deryneia. The festival lasts for two nights and is held in mid-December.
Entertainment & Amenities
There are many traditional Cypriot tavernas in the village that serve home cooked Cypriot dishes that will leave you asking for more and what is even better is the price, a Cypriot Meze (a mix of about 10 local dishes) costs as little as 5pound(cyp) per person.
Besides traditional Cypriot food, there are tavernas and cafes that serve international cuisine such as steak, pizza or just plain burger with chips.
Unlike the resorts of Ayia Napa and Protaras that close between November and April, Deryneia is open all year round, so you will always have somewhere to go for a drink or a meal.
You will also find excellent shopping facilities including large supermarkets and pharmacies, lady’s, men’s & children’s fashion stores, sports shops, and jewellery stores.
There is also a gym in Deryneia that includes an indoor swimming pool and sauna but if you are more of an outdoors type of person, Cape Greco National Park is a mere 10minutes drive away and offers some of most beautiful nature trails anywhere on the island.
As well as numerous private medical centres in the area, the newly built (2005) Famagusta General Hospital has just been opened in Deryneia and offers all the latest technology in medical care.
If you are considering making the move to Cyprus permanently but your children are too old to learn the Greek language, you will be happy to know that there is an English school a mere 3 minute drive away from Deryneia.
Place & Location
Deryneia is next to the large town of Paralimni and only a five-minute drive away from the beach, whilst the motorway leading to all the other cities is literally around the corner.
The village is also right next to the city of Famagusta and this makes it a great investment. According to many reports, the return of this beautiful city to its rightful owners is in the foreseeable future and since Deryneia is with-in a stones throw of Famagusta, the value of Properties in the area is expected to substantially increase.
The popular resorts of Protaras and Ayia Napa are both about a 10minute drive away as is Cape Greco National Park.
Relax… It’s Deryneia!
It’s hard to sum up all of the qualities that Deryneia has to offer.
After all, where do you start?
Do you start with the wonderful people that will welcome you into their communtity?
Do you start with the history and culture that surrounds and accompanies you around every corner?
Or, do you start with all the modern shops and amenities that are at your convenience?
There is only one place to start and that is here in Deryneia, because, unless you can see, hear, smell and touch this beautiful place, it’s hard to really sum it all up using only words.
